Intrinsically Safe systems provide a safe operating environment for personnel and equipment operating in a hazardous area. Intrinsic Safety (IS) is based on the principle of restricting the electrical energy transmitted into a hazardous area. This insures that any sparks or heated surfaces that results from an electrical failures are insufficient to cause ignition and the threat of an explosion is thus eliminated.

Zettlex Large Shaft IncOders can operate in harsh environments common to the oil and gas industry and can be configured to be Intrinsically Safe. Resolutions vary from 14bits (16 K steps/revolution) up to 21 bits (2 million steps/revolution). The OD/ID vary from 75mm/25mm to 250mm/200 mm. Unlike a resolver, the Stator is mounted to the fixed surface and the Rotor to the rotating shaft, without wiring. The large ID of the Stator and Rotor allow through shafts, slip rings, optic fibers, pipes, cables etc. In addition, there is no need for compliant couplings. Mounting tolerances are easy and exceptional! There is no contact, no bearings and no wearing parts. The output signals can be either analog or digital, and the input power supply can be 5, 12 or 24 VDC. Since the output is absolute, the true position is available upon power up without the need to home the sensor.
