MEPO is a SPT Group owned software solution supporting use of reservoir simulation in the oil and gas industry. MEPO facilitates use of parallel processing of reservoir simulation runs and global optimization technology to make reservoir engineering work more efficient and consistent with the new geologic modelling practices. The global optimization algorithms are applied to calibrate reservoir simulation models according to field observations and to optimize production strategies. Experimental design techniques are applied to assess and quantify risk and uncertainty related to production forecasting. The software solution is frequently referenced at conferences in the oil and gas business due to an extensive user base in 50 Exploration and Production companies world wide. Industrial usage is mainly related to assisted history matching, uncertainty quantification and production optimization.

MEPO history

MEPO was originally developed in Germany under the name Multipurpose Environment for Parallel Optimization through a research project at the Braunschweig University of Technology and a Joint Industry Project supported by Statoil, Hydro, Total S.A. and ENI. The first commercial release, MEPO2, was in 2004 and supported use of the optimization technology on Unix and Linux OS. Input was provided through text files of similar format as the key reservoir simulator supported ((ECLIPSE (reservoir simulator)). Post processing of simulation results could be done in a graphical user interface. MEPO3 was developed in parallel with MEPO to provide a platform independent version of the technology, as use of reservoir simulation increasingly is being done on the Windows OS. MEPO3 is coded in Java and use client-server technology. Supported platforms are Windows, Linux and cross-platform (Windows frontend/client & Linux server). MEPO3 is fully operated out of a graphical user interface. The risk quantification functionality was improved through the acquisition of Decision, an experimental design based software developed by Norwegian Computing Center in 2004. When MEPO3 was commercially released in October 2006, the long form of the product name was dropped. New versions of the application are made available biannually. The last release was MEPO3.3 in Dec 2009. The product development is jointly done in Hamburg (Germany) and Oslo (Norway). A new Joint Industry Project named MEPO forward was initiated in 2009 to allow E&P companies to influence the product deliveries. The JIP partners include BG Group, ENI and ConocoPhillips.
