Parker Launches Specification-Grade PTFE and PEEK Seal Materials for Offshore Drilling Applications Salt Lake City, UT – May 6, 2013 – Parker Hannifin Corporation, the leader in motion and control technologies, has developed a new series of specification-grade polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) seal materials formulated for high-pressure, high-temperature offshore drilling applications.

Unlike most commercial grade PTFE and PEEK materials, these new PTFE and PEEK compounds were developed by Parker to be “specification grade” materials. Parts produced from these grades will be accompanied by physical property reports from each lot of material. These physical properties are derived from tensile tests performed on test coupons machined from the billet of material rather than from data supplied by the resin or powder manufacturer. These "real world" lot based properties ensure that every part made from the same lot meets the minimum physical properties specified.

“When customers take delivery of Parker seal assemblies made from these materials, they are assured superior product quality, reliable performance and longer seal life, backed by actual lot based physical property certifications,” said Jeff Lynch, Oil & Gas Engineering Manager. “Such assurance in Oil & Gas sealing applications is crucial.”

Each of the new "specification grade" PTFE and PEEK compounds has been tested to API 6A, Annex F for fluids FF/HH (10% Sour Gas) and is suitable for downhole environments in the most demanding applications.

Compound Designation Material Description Tensile Strength (minimum) Elongation at Break (minimum) Hardness (Shore D)
130 Unfilled PTFE 3,000 psi 250% 55
317 Carbon and graphite filled PTFE 2,200 psi 100% 65
318 Graphite filled PTFE 2,700 psi 220% 63
622 PPS, MoS2 and carbon filled PTFE 1,500 psi 130% 65
W4773 Injection molded, high molecular weight, impact resistant PEEK 14,000 psi 50% 87
W4768 Extruded, high molecular weight, impact resistant PEEK 15,000 psi 100% 87
W4605 Hot compression molded, high molecular weight, impact resistant PEEK 15,000 psi 25% 87

“Parker’s expertise in material development – specifically for high-pressure, high temperature Oil & Gas applications – is anchored by the strong relationships Parker enjoys with ‘in-the-trench’ design engineers from major drilling equipment manufacturers,” said Eric Williams, Parker Seal’s Oil and Gas Market Manager. “We understand the heightened sensitivity to quality and strict adherence to standards in this market and we’re on board to meet our customers’ specifications and compliance requirements for offshore drilling. By providing full lot traceability for these specification-grade materials, we offer an extra level of quality.”

The new, high performance PTFE and PEEK formulations complement Parker’s family of specialty materials for Oil & Gas service which includes nitrile rubber (NBR), hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR), carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR), fluoroelastomers (FKM, FFKM), polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) formulations. Many of Parker’s materials have been qualified against NORSOK M-710 rapid gas decompression (RGD) and sour gas test requirements.

Parker’s Engineered Polymer Systems Division designs and manufactures engineered elastomeric and plastic seals and energy management devices utilizing leading edge technologies. We offer standard and custom engineered solutions in a broad spectrum of materials including chemically resistant high temperature perfluoroelastomers, extrusion/explosive decompression resistant FKMs and HNBRs, Resilon® Polyurethane, PEEK and PTFE. An operating unit of Parker Hannifin Corporation, Parker EPS Division’s worldwide network consists of multiple manufacturing locations and distributor and service center locations in 48 countries to serve our customers’ global needs.

With annual sales exceeding $13 billion in fiscal year 2012, Parker Hannifin is the world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems, providing precision-engineered solutions for a wide variety of mobile, industrial and aerospace markets. The company employs approximately 60,000 people in 48 countries around the world.
