The PPDM Association (Professional Petroleum Data Management Association) is a global, not-for-profit organization that develops data management standards for the petroleum industry.[1] In Calgary, the PPDM Association created a workgroup in 1989. PPDM is sponsored by a number of operating companies and data vendors. The goals of the workgroup were to:

  • Create a comprehensive relational petroleum data model
  • Establish baseline definitions for well components across the well lifecycle
  • Develop the baseline for well data management and use this baseline as a foundation for comparison with key data sources.

PPDM and the Need to Organize Petroleum Data

Historically, petroleum data has been managed and analyzed using many different proprietary systems. These systems are typically built based on local terminology and business needs, and use different practices for identifying, gathering, transferring and interpreting information. A typical operating company may use dozens (or even hundreds) of software applications. Each department is tuned to the needs of different segments of the company; production accounting, field operations, seismic exploration, reserves management and financial departments all store information about wells in their respective software applications. [2]

To overcome differences in petroleum data organization, PPDM incorporated in 1991, in Calgary, Alberta, as a not for profit society. The founding members were a group of petroleum data experts, who were focused on standardizing practices in petroleum data management.
