Chevron is accepting online applications for the position of Legal Advisor located in Cape Town, South Africa through , July 7, 2017. Chevron South Africa, Law Department, provides comprehensive, high quality legal advice and advocacy to Chevron South Africa and Chevron Botswana and their subsidiaries.  The successful candidate for this postion will manage a broad portfolio of work related to specific business units of Chevron South Africa and Chevron Botswana. The Legal Advisor is expected to have strong general transactional and litigation knowledge related to large-scale business activities in South Africa.  Particular expertise in franchise, oil and gas downstream business, refining, construction and/or environmental law is desired.  The Legal Advisor is expected to handle regulatory, permitting, enforcement, compliance management, litigation and transactional issues on behalf of the Company.  Strong analytical, problem solving, negotiating and communication skills are essential.  The ability to work closely with business clients, technical subject matter experts, other in-house legal counsel, senior management and outside law firm personnel to facilitate effective and timely delivery of advice and resolve issues is also essential.  Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

Managing an extensive portfolio of transaction and litigation matters for specific business units within Chevron South Africa and Chevron Botswana Providing legal support to business clients concerning internal or external audits as needed Achieving excellent, cost effective results through early recognition of risks and strategic case and matter management that emphasizes the Legal Advisor's own representation of the business client, with judicious, effective use and management of outside counsel when appropriate Coordinating and ensuring maximum effective use of in-house and outside legal resources Creating and maintaining the highest level of client confidence and satisfaction through excellent communication and unqualified professionalism Maintaining maximum legal expertise in the Legal Advisor's fields of responsibility, keeping abreast of policy and regulatory developments, participating with other in-house personnel and with industry associations in providing constructive input to governmental bodies on legislative and regulatory issues, cooperating with and assisting the other members of the Legal Department on day-to-day matters and mentoring or receiving mentorship as  appropriate

Working with business clients and outside counsel to develop and implement strategies consistent with business objectives and company litigation principles

Facilitating innovative resolutions to disputes, utilizing ADR when appropriate

Directing and participating in incident investigations

Effectively identifying, partnering with and managing outside counsel, including establishing and managing outside counsel budget and controlling costs

Specific responsibilities for this job include: drafting contracts and advising business clients on new or existing contracts; extensive client counseling concerning applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines; interpretation of laws, rules and regulations; working daily with Law Department colleagues in-country and overseas; and participation in the selection and oversight of outside counsel for advice and litigation Required Qualifications:


Undergraduate degree from a recognized university and an L.L.B from an accredited law school.  Admission as an Attorney or Advocate to the High Court of South Africa

A minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience in a law firm or comparable corporate legal environment with emphasis in litigation management, transactional expertise, document drafting, negotiation and transaction closing

Demonstrated ability to analyze and evaluate complex disputes and issues

Excellent written and oral communications skills

Highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a team environment and partnering with clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff

Ability to effectively manage a high volume of complex and diverse matters
